Starshinov played for the Soviet team at the 1964 and the 1968 Olympics. He also was a member of the team at the 1961, 1963, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1969, 1970, and the 1971 World Championships. Except in 1961, the Soviets won all of these tournaments. He also played for the Soviet team at the Summit Series in 1972. He was inducted into the Russian and Soviet Hockey Hall of Fame in 1963 and the International Ice Hockey Federation Hall of Fame in 2007.
