Martin Gimbel is the eldest son and second child of Jim and Freda Gimbel. In May 1975, Martin was thrown out by Jim after an argument but later allowed back home. Jim felt he was being patronised by his son about how to do farming as Martin was a child. By 1977, Martin was beginning to be physically abused by his father, who not long later committed suicide.
