Tarler was one of King Herstad's soldiers that accompanied Diligence's caravan when it left The Wheel. On the twelfth night after they left, Tarler and his colleague Huben were murdered while on watch, the blood frozen to ice in their veins. Diligence later learned that they had been killed by Dubiel, who came to the camp to darken the heart of one of her traveling companions - this was the same night that Nury was infected by his dark magic.
