Allan had only recently manifested the ability before his death, and was still learning to control it. As a result, he would automatically absorb and neutralise any shield placed around him, or even near him. Because of this, it proved impossible to save him or his wife using any kind of defensive ability. If he had lived, he would have been able to learn to use the ability consciously, prevent the automatic absorption, and choose to absorb away specific shields when targeted.
