In chemistry, a phosphate is any chemical that contains a group consisting of one atom of phosphorous and four of oxygen (PO4) in a tetrahedral (pyramid) configuration. Most metabolic processes in living things involve the addition and removal of phosphate ions from proteins. They are also part of the building process for hard tissues such as bones and teeth. Some organophosphates are used as pesticides.
