Major Stijns commanded the 5th Air Defense Company during the war, defending Brussels from countless Russian air raids and cruise missile attacks as part of Battlegroup 28. Over the course of four separate enemy offensives against the city, Stijns and his officers developed refinements to their AAVs target acquisition systems that improved their ability to detect, target and destroy fast-moving, low-altitude attackers, such as Russian slamhound fighters.
