New Irkutsk (Russian: Новый Иркутск, Novy Irkutsk), formally known as the Governorate of New Irkutsk (Новоиркутская губерния, Novoirkutskaya guberniya), is one of the governorates of Alaska. The Governorate of New Irkustsk (Russian: Новоиркутская губерния, Novoirkutskaya guberniya), commonly known as New Irkutsk (Новый Иркутск, Novyy Irkutsk), is a governorate of the Alaskan Democratic Federative Republic. Originally disputed territory between Kenai and Shelikof, New Irkutsk was formed in the 1940s as a compromise government to act as a buffer state between the two governorates. Despite its modern day origins, the region began to develop after the discovery of gold, leading to an influx of prospectors into the area.
