The current president is Marie-George Buffet of the Socialist Union Party, who beat former far-right President Bruno Gollnisch on the 2012 elections. The far right National Front party won the elections in 1992, and then consequently in the next two decades. Its success was mostly attributed to the financial crisis and immigration problems of France. The National Front indulged a strict immigration policy, restriction of French citizenship, a zero tolerance policy against crime, and heavy protectionism in trade.
