This bowl game was notable for being the highest ranked non-BCS bowl game in the nation that year, with Boise State ranked 9th and Louisville ranked 10th. Boise State played in place of the Mountain West Conference champions, the Utah Utes, who played in the Fiesta Bowl instead.
