Hurricane Erika was the strongest Atlantic tropical cyclone recorded in the month of June. The fifth named storm, second hurricane, and first major hurricane of the highly active 2021 Atlantic hurricane season, Erika originated from a tropical depression in the central Caribbean Sea on June 21. In favorable conditions for tropical cyclogenesis, the disturbance intensified into tropical strength later that day.
