Built in 1876 as part of the development of the Birmingham West Suburban Railway by the Midland Railway, it closed, under the auspices of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, in 1944. The original station building was then leased for commercial uses, in which it remains occupied to this day. As part of the creation of the Cross-City Line services, the current station opened in 1978. Built with its main entrance on Lee Bank Middleway, the cost of building the station (approximately £300,000), was met by the West Midlands Passenger Transport Executive.
