The nervous Man recorded an audition tape for the Bill & Coo Video Dating Agency. When Bet Lynch signed up with the agency to find a boyfriend in May 1983, his was one of the videos which Margot Sutcliffe showed her. The man described himself as "sober and industrious", and was described as "such a nice man" by Margot, but he proved to be a turn-off for Bet; in his video he fondled his face with anxiety, stammered, and talked about his liking of gardening and rambling and said he didn't drink except for the occasional wine with meals.
