After the accidental death of his oldest son and the forced separation between him and his wife, Ethan is forced to buy an apartment in the city where he looks after his surviving son on the weekends. After Shaun is kidnapped by the Origami Killer, Ethan is sent home by the police where reporters are crowded around the front of his apartment. Feeling like a prisoner in his own home and depressed over the loss of his son, Ethan eventually discovers that the Origami Killer has left him clues to save Shaun.
