Captain Joel Randolph was a 23rd century Human Starfleet officer. He was the commander of the starship USS Yorktown. In 2286, Randolph reported to Starfleet Command that his ship lost power following an encounter with the "Whale Probe". The Yorktown's chief engineer had been attempting to deploy a makeshift solar sail with which to focus and absorb radiation from a nearby sun they were orbiting. (Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home) Joel Randolph's name is from the script, he was played by Vijay Amritraj.
