The individual whom the Crusader who bore the name of Roland was originally a fighter in the pits of Kalden, fighting others with his bare hands. Roland rescued him, but the former fighter was an obstinate apprentice. He loudly complained as he polished his master's armor. However, in the man's own mind, his insolence got his master killed. As per the traditions of the Crusaders, the man took up the name of "Roland." The experience with his master changed him, and he proudly bore his master's name, considering him to be a great man. He later wrote a memoir detailing his experiences.
