John Whitman was the author of the HarperEntertainment novels Planet of the Apes: Force and Planet of the Apes: Resistance, set in the continuity of the 2001 re-imagining of Planet of the Apes. A third novel in the series - Planet of the Apes: Rule - was written by J.E. Bright, but was not published. In related publicity, Whitman was credited incorrectly as it's author. However, he had prepared an outline for an aborted fourth novel - Planet of the Apes: Extinction.
