Malien was the Matah of all the Aachim of Santhenar and a mancer of great power and subtlety. She was descended from the great Aachim heroine from the time of the taking of Aachan, Elienor. Once the lover of Tensor, Malien's union with him resulted in the birth of Rael. Malien later cast off Tensor and became one of the Aachim's most respected leaders, as well as a legend due to her role at the Time of the Mirror; during which she strived for the good of all the human species, rather than just the Aachim.
