The Union of New England was a member of the former United States. It left the United States in 180? to return to the British Empire under an agreement known as the Boston Treaty of Union. By the terms of the treaty, modeled on the earlier Vermont Treaty of Union, New England agreed to recognize the authority of King George III, through the appointment of a Governor-General (later renamed Viceroy). Legislative authority for the Union, however, would lie with the Parliament of New England. The Parliament of New England would have the right to veto acts of the British Parliament pertaining to the Union, but the British Parliament in turn had veto power over the New England Parliament's acts. In the 1840's, the Union rejoined the United States as a single member.
