Non-mythos story by Arthur Machen that was an influence on The Dunwich Horror by H.P. Lovecraft. It is of some slight interest here for featuring a character named Ambrose and referencing Troytowns. Mention is also made to a malign entity known as 'the black man' (see Nyarlathotep) and to the making of signs (likely inspiring the Voorish sign in The Dunwich Horror and perhaps reminiscent of the making of the elder sign in Lovecraft's The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath).
