When the sanatorium facility moved into the East Wing of the facility in 1901 to treat patients suffering with tuberculosis and health tourists, the resident inmates of the wing were relocated to the already fully-occupied West Wing, and were housed in the underground levels of the prison, which had originally served as boiler rooms and cells for solitary confinement inmates.
