It differed from the Winchester in that it was side-ejecting, the main selling point originally being it was better protected from weather and debris than the competing top-ejecting Winchester. Marlin would later convert the 1893 from square bolt to round bolt with side ejection port as the Model 336, with the selling point becoming ease of scope sight mounting.
