The spider drive was a revolutionary technology providing a means of space travel without the use of impellers. Because it did not use impellers, starships using it were almost undetectable in operation. Furthermore, if they used care in transitioning between normal space and hyperspace, their transition was extremely hard to detect. On the downside, the acceleration rates of this new means of propulsion were modest and substantially lower than with traditional drives. Still, the military advantages were substantial.
