Samuel Clarence Witwicky was the eldest son of Clarence Witwicky. His father was a hard-drinking, cheating, gambling man, and Sam grew up serious, taking care of his younger brothers and sisters and shielding them as best he could from his father's alcoholism. When he got older, he protected his sibling's children as well, trying his best to undo the damage done to his family by his grandfather's incarceration.
