Vinland was first settled by Viking explorers in 998, though mysterious creatures called "Skraelings" drove them away. The land was resettled by the Kalmar Union in 1497, and settlers quickly spread across the land. The Vinland Republic had nominal independence for a long time because orders could not cross the ocean quickly, but declared independence in name in 1504 when the Civil War broke out.
