The HD 5-D was an experimental hyperdrive booster introduced after the Battle of Yavin. By shunting extra power through the engines of a starship, it greatly reduced transit times. However, overloading the engine systems was dangerous; the HD 5-D often times burnt out after several uses, damaging the main drive systems.
