Treatment starts with steroids, but surgery may be necessary if the ulcers or damage to the colon are widespread. There is no cure for the condition and it requires ongoing management and monitoring. Ulcerative colitis often appears with other systemic autoimmune conditions. Patients with ulcerative colitis are also at increased risk for cancer of the colon and rectum.
