Joseph "Joe" Plaice is an able seaman and long-time follower of Aubrey. His life, threatened by a depressed skull fracture, was once saved by Maturin. In the movie he is the first to think of Hollom as a Jonah. He is Barret Bonden's cousin. He was played in the 2003 film by George Innes.
