In mid 1939 a German warship sailed unopposed to Copenhagen harbor and landed troops right next to Amalienborg Palace. After a brief shootout with the Danish Royal Guard, the palace was occupied. Some Danish civilians watched the whole scene incredulous, wondering if the act was part of some movie rather than an actual invasion. However, American tourist Peggy Druce realized immediately that she wasn't going to return to the United States any time soon.
