Bernie Johansen was a half-gyptian man working at Jordan College as the pastry cook. He was a kindly, solitary man, and he was one of the rare people with a dæmon the same sex as himself (i.e. male). He informed the other gyptians, namely John Faa and Farder Coram, of Lyra Silvertongue's antics and status whilst she was in Oxford.
