Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is the main protagonist of the book series. He was the last of the great Viking heroes, and lived during the period when the dragons vanished from Earth. The series takes the form of Hiccup's memoirs, written by Hiccup as an old man (76 for Book 11) in the third person because, as he puts it, the boy he was seems so far away that he might as well be a different person entirely.
