The night-shift commander was a starship post that was relatively equal to that of the official first officer. But the night side commander sees all aspects of command during a ships simulated "night time" hours. The night time crew lives separate lives from day and evening shift officers as they are typically sleep during normal duty hours. Some night side officers have a fleeting knowledge of the Captain and his/her main command staff as they pass along information typically in reports and duty logs. Efficient night side officers are always flexible and have been noted as being able to fall soundly asleep or come awake at a moments notice.
