He played junior for the Peterborough Petes and represented Canada at the 1980 World Junior Championship. The Colorado Rockies selected him 148th overall at the 1980 NHL Entry Draft but he chose instead to go to the University of Toronto. At Toronto he played four seasons, helping the Blues win the University Cup in 1984, when he was also voted playoff MVP. He then signed as a free agent with the Washington Capitals. Hidi played only 7 games with them, scoring 2 goals and 1 assist. After two seasons with the Binghamton Whalers he retired in 1986.
