The mongrel complex (from Portuguese complexo de vira-lata), is an expression coined by Brazilian playwright and writer Nelson Rodrigues, which originally referred to the psychological shock suffered by Brazilians in 1950, when the Brazil lost to Uruguay in the 1950 World Cup final match, hosted in Brazil. Brazil would have recovered from the shock (at least football-wise) in 1958, when it won a World Cup for the first time. According to Rodrigues, the phenomenon is not limited to football.
