The Illyrian Republic was originally a number of separate provinces which broke off from the Ottoman Empire during the War of the Sublime Porte. Illyria originally received support from the Gallican Republic which saw it as a buffer against Hapsburg expansion into the former Ottoman Empire. It later annexed some adjoining Balkan territories after the collapse of the Hapsburg Empire.
