A reason is usually something that means, in smart-talk, to present a prominent and signficant alibi, but also which the owner truly possesses that would cancel out an opposite and/or specifically state why something is or something is not. It is distinct from an excuse in such a direction that states a complete and satisfactory termination of a topic.
