In Welsh mythology, these were ghostly hounds with red ears from the underworld, Annwn. They are associated with the sounds of wild geese. They were often seen in the middle of winter and the howling winter wind is said to be the wake of their chase of people to take down into the underworld. Cwn means "hounds".
