This class of two ships is the third type of dreadnought battleship to enter service in the United States Navy. Essentially, they are slightly enlarged and improved versions of the preceding Delaware class, but are the first class of American dreadnoughts to receive steam turbine machinery exclusively. The ships entered service in 1909 and 1910.
