Zeta was created as one of Dr. Eggman's E-100 Series robots. At one point, Eggman got annoyed with Zeta and converted him into a turret, no longer mobile. When E-102 Gamma returned to the Egg Carrier looking for Beta, he found Zeta and reprogrammed him, before finally encountering Beta.
