The Lord Commander is the head of the Kingsguard, appointed for life by the king of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. Ser Barristan Selmy held the title around 300 AL, but was removed after the death of Robert Baratheon. Ser Jaime Lannister, the new king's uncle (and in fact father) replaced him.
