The people of Cologne had burned wizards in front of Saint Martin's in 1175. In 1176, they attempted to catch a werewolf named Dieter and do the same thing to him. While Dieter had not watched the burning, he remembered the substantial crowds outside the church, which spurred him on in his quest for sanctuary.
