In 1911, a modified version of the GTB 1906 was introduced as new standard destroyer (Großes Torpedoboot). The differences to the preceding class were fairly minor, they carried more torpedoes, but suffered from bad seagoing capabilities as they were reduced in size. This earned them the nickname Lans-Krüppel (Lans cripples), after the officer in charge who had ordered them. They were, however, the first torpedo boats to be driven by oil-fired boilers exclusively and kept the two bow torpedo tubes, able to fire straight ahead. The first six boats of the class were built in the Vulcan shipyard in Stettin.
