The term Internet meme (File:Loudspeaker.svg /ˈmiːm/ spelled:meem') is used to describe a concept that spreads via the Internet. The term is a reference to the concept of memes (a neologism created by Richard Dawkins for his 1976 book The Selfish Gene), although the latter concept refers to a much broader category of cultural information.
