In January 2015, Kaya Scodelario was reported to star in the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean film, and was confirmed on February 17, when production began. After filming concluded on July 2015, Kaya Scodelario's character was confirmed as Carina Smyth during the D23 Expo presentation for the film.
