The message bottle was sent along with the raft and contained messages and letters meant for families of the survivors once those on the raft were rescued. Several of the survivors placed their messages inside including Tracey who sent a letter to her family back in Fresno, CA, Hurley who sent a letter to his mother who was given Hurley's vast winnings, and several other survivors.
