Wackiki Rabbit, directed by Chuck Jones, is about two starving castaways trying to cook Bugs Bunny. It was produced by Leon Schlesinger and Warner Bros. in 1943. This cartoon short is significant from a historical standpoint because of its use of abstract backgrounds. The cartoon uses wavy purple and green patterns to signify the tropical atmosphere. Some people find this modern technique to be distracting. These critics argue that the background separates the characters from the background. They argue that the characters, consequentially, cannot interact with the background and that the viewer is disconnected from the cartoon. Other people find that the abstract background effectively depicts the tropical atmosphere and the castaways' delusional mindset.
