SuperValu was founded in 1926 as Winston and Newell Company. After that, in 1952, the company was renamed SuperValu. In 1971, SuperValu bought Shopko, a discount chain which they sold 20 years later. In 1980, they acquired Cub Foods. Later in the 90s, Supervalu bought regional chains, including Scott's, Shop 'n Save, and Save-A-Lot. In 2006, SuperValu bought Albertsons, which gave SuperValu chains like Jewel-Osco, Acme, and others. In 2007, SuperValu sold its subsidiary Scott's to rival Kroger. In 2013, SuperValu undid its 2006 purchase of Albertsons, and sold it to Albertsons LLC. Since then, the two Albertsons chains have been reunited.
