Like a previous pulley invention, the pulley was initially hand-operated. However, after a mishap involving Ed, a motor was hooked up to the pulley in order to get him back into the treehouse more efficiently so that Edd and Eddy wouldn't have to continually pull Ed up to the top of the tree. This motor was far more effective, lifting Ed back into the treehouse several times (and in one case lifting both Ed and Eddy to the treehouse) after he fell off.
