Involved in a car crash, Gravener is rendered clinically dead--and the Mysterons take him over in that condition. But his brain functions are not irreversibly terminated in the crash. As a direct result, he survives the situation that resulted in his takeover. Then, after his Mysteron likeness is apparently destroyed, the ORIGINAL Gravener gets instructions from the Mysterons.
