Sweden is a hereditary monarchy, where the throne is inherited among the descendants of King Adolphus Frederick, who became King of Sweden 1751. Legitimate and legitimated descendants of said king are in line to the throne according to lineal cognatic primogeniture (but not fully cognatic - male lines pass before female lines). The present monarch is Charles XIII Gustavus (Carl XIII Gustaf), born 30 April 1946, who inherited the throne 15 September 1973, at the death of his grandfather, Gustavus VI Adolphus (Gustav VI Adolf). 1. Crown Prince Charles Philip (Carl Philip), born 13 May 1979
