The mate on the Spaceship Surprise is the Captain's second-in-command. He's generally less enthusiastic than his superior. He frequently asks the captain to remind him why they are always traveling from planet to planet ("and all that stuff", as he words it) and appears devastated upon finding out, although he does gradually get into the spirit. He often refers to the captain as "brave," despite the facts.
